I have been an Active Rain member for a month now and love it.  I love writing blogs, especially about my local region of North Atlanta.  While they are not page long articles, I still believe they get the idea or point across.  All of the sudden I've been noticing a lot of blogs targeting "new bloggers" and "short bloggers".  Many of them have talked about how AR bloggers are writing garbage and cutesy blogs.  Who has the time to read 50 blogs a day and judge who can write better than the others?  I guess a lot of us do.  Many of my blogs are local news and ideas that only fellow agents in my region would remotely care about.  Does that make it a garbage or cutesy post because it is not featured on the AR homepage?  Just becuase I don't care to read about a bridge opening in a small town in Oregon or an Agent bringing her Pomeranian to an open house doesn't mean it is a lame post.  We all have the choice to skip it.  A lot of Active Rain members are getting scared and feeling insulted over all of this.  Many have quit blogging because they fear they are not "blogging correctly".  Isn't the point of this network to nurture proffessional relationships, not intimidate new bloggers who are learning this wonderful new medium.  Most of us in this community are members of other online communities as well.  We know that there are always going to be people who make a two sentence blog, just to get a post in.  What can we do about it?  Probably not much.  Caleb and the staff at Active Rain are awesome, and are sure to be working on a scoring/posting balance.  I might catch some heat for this, but I love this Network too much not to say anything.

14 Comments on Active Rain Blogging? Watch out for the Blog Police?

I enjoy reading about some areas that have local content. I hate reading stats and blogs about loans. Thats my opinion however. My better blogs sometimes get no comments and the ideas have made me thousands of dollars which I find strange. That is fine with me.We are blogging for different reasons but there are some interesting people who I read their blogs daily. You may be one of them.

Eric,

We KNEW you guys hated blogs about loans but so many agents wanted us to write them.

I fall asleep to the stuff we read so I was suprised that so many Realtors encoraged us to write 3 weeks ago.  I fall asleep to the stuff AND I LIKE IT (lending information) so how could you appreciate the lender's info?

I appreciate the TRUTH about our blogs. Everyone has politely acted like it's interesting but I knew, deep down in your hearts, you were being polite.

Jennifer,

The outpouring of blogs recently posted that are just like yours is proof that the overwhelming majority of AR members are all on the same page.

Blog for yourself...but more importantly blog for your audience...Fellow Rainers will read what they find interesting, but the true beauty of this site is the ability to reach the masses.  the more you blog about local things in your market, the better chance your blogs will be indexed and when local people are looking for local things the keywords will pop and they will find your blog....you will be guilty by association with all things in your local area....

this is a great way to get business.

I think more people complain about unoriginal thoughts and copy and pasting for points than they ever would complain about short to the point local posts.

Take it from a mortgage guy...its hard to be interesting enough to get these snobs to read your heart poured out and bled on paper.

 Blog on Sister!

This is free blogging site and everyone is free to blog about anything that's on your mind. I skip the ones that don't catch my attention and that is OK. But I am not going to complain about it in my blogs. But I definitely have learned a lot from the members. Cheers to all...

I think it's probably MORE important to blog about things going on locally - that's the only way to reach your target market, right?

To echo what someone else said - I think the 'cut & paste' blogs are what people've been complaining about.  We take our scoring very serious here on ActiveRain! ha!  And to watch someone rack up points by doing a recap of stuff that's already been covered by someone else is a cheap shot.

I think if people who do that got no response they'd get tired of it eventually and start to fade away (hopefully).

Sometimes I *like* hearing crazy real-life stories about goofy stuff that happens to people at open houses, closings, first time meetings with a new client, etc... That's a MAJOR part of the fun for me here.  That's why I'm VERY glad that there's a "Members Only" feature for posting your blogs.

Just remember - anyone can create a profile & pretend to be in the real estate industry.  I'd never blog anything that I'd be embarassed for my dad to read.

;-)

It's interesting, since I made a commitment to be a better (read consistent) blogger on my personal blog sites I look at many, many blogs every day.  Some of the content out there is outstanding and written in almost poetic prose, while some other posts, in my mind, are outlandish, or two sentences signifying little but including a link or two, for the serps perhaps.

I'm too new to this on a serious basis, but I know what I like.  Does it make me right?  Yes . . . for me, but I'm only one of a staggering number of blog enthusiasts out there.  Everybody responds to their own inner voice.  It's all worthwhile, even if it's merely an outlet for one's alter ego.

I suspect it will be a long time before we find out what path(s) are the best to reach our intended audience.

I agree that you should be able to blog about anything you like...if I don't find it interesting then I will scroll to the next one. Please don't tell me what I can or can't blog about...just move on down!!

Jennifer, if people didn't bring different thoughts to the website it would be pretty boring. Thank you for bring other things to the table to consider.

I agree, we need different points to talk about, even if they are not mainstream.
