Based on feedback we are going to try to be more pro-active in getting members involved in updates to the system before we make them.  This will prevent people from being so surprised when something changes and also get feedback before implementing a change.

One of the changes we plan to make in the next several days is changing the current categories/channels that blog posts can be added to.  Current it looks like:

Instead we are going to change it to, two categories with several sub categories.

For Real Estate Professionals

  • ActiveRain Community
  • Industry News
  • Tips, Tricks and Advice
  • Real Estate Opinions
  • Off topic, humor, etc
  • Advertising

For Consumers

  • General Information and Advice
  • Regional Information
  • Regional News
  • Advertising a listing
  • Other service advertisement

What this will allow us to do it provide some better post viewing options, and also better display content to consumers.  The existing viewing options would still be available all posts for real estate professionals could be viewed regardless of sub-category.  We want to get feedback on the categories we are planning to offer.  The idea is to keep the list of categories reasonably short, and if need be, we can offer more later.

I like it! Will each catagory be "graded"/"pointed" differently, as well?

10/18/2006 05:42 PM by Mariana Wagner ~ Colorado Springs REALTOR® (Wagner iTeam -Keller Williams Clients' Choice)

Matt, I assume we will still be able to place a post in both RE and Consumer cats. at the same time? If so, I like it.

10/18/2006 05:47 PM by Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc

Works for me. When you implement it, just be very specific about what goes in each category, that way there will be no excuses for people to post incorrectly (although we know we're human!)

10/18/2006 05:47 PM by Rich Jacobson ~ ActiveRain Community Builder (ActiveRain Corporation)

Bryant: Yes, you can still post to both main catagories.  We will still have some existing restrictions such as posts put in one of the advertising sub-catagories can't be added to other sub-catagories.

Rich: We currently have the ability for us as administrators to easily remove a post from a catagory while reading through the list.  We are also going to provide a couple moderators this ability, so we have several people helping us keep things clean.

10/18/2006 05:52 PM by Matt Heaton (ActiveRain Corp.)

The categories are perfect based on the topics that I've seen.  Good job guys.  I'm sure some more categories will be needed in the future, but it's a good start!

10/18/2006 05:53 PM by Justin Smith - Blogging Coach {Blogging, SEO, SEM, SMO} (Real Estate Tomato)

Several people including myself put Consumer related information that would be considered Market Updates.  Perhaps a sub category for that?   Otherwise I really like it...

10/18/2006 05:57 PM by Western New York Home Sales | Colleen Kulikowski (Hunt Real Estate ERA)

Matt.... that is a great idea. I belong to sports site also and they have moderators on there that can delete and ban members. It keeps people in check.

The rest of it looks good.

I like the market update idea, we do have a lot in store as far as positioning content to consumers.  Ben get's back on vacation this weekend, so development on the site will really start to ramp up again next week.

10/18/2006 05:59 PM by Matt Heaton (ActiveRain Corp.)

Will you be penalizing posts that are not supposed to be in certain catagory...ie: listings...(I STILL see them in the general posts.)

:-D

10/18/2006 06:09 PM by Central / Orlando Florida real estate - Alexander Harb PSEM®, E-Agent® (Beach and Luxury Realty Inc.)

I like the break down, and I think what Rich stated is very important, the need to be specific.

10/18/2006 06:59 PM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

Will make it easier to categorize but adds more clicks if now we have to click a category and then click a field...

10/18/2006 07:20 PM by Teri Isner GRI, CRS, CIPS (Keller Williams Celebration)

And "rants" will fall under "off-topic"?  I think rants might need their own sub-category.  :-)

10/18/2006 07:38 PM by Cheryl Johnson, Bob Taylor Properties, Inc., Los Angeles, CA

Great -

This is a very positive step - more specific categories will help people find what they need even more quickly.

I would approach imposing regulations with caution... AR could become just another forum.

How come this CEO isn't you?

Angus By removing posts from a list I mean the ability to remove from a specific category, not remove the post itself.  Our position still is that we won't moderate content itself, as long as there aren't legal issues (such as a copyright violation).  But I often see people add a post to EVERY catagory regardless of what where it fits, that just frustrates people looking for posts.   Nothing wrong with the post, just the catagories they added it to.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the updates, I think that the new categories will be good. Especially to make sure that potential clients don't read the blogs they are not intended to on the net, even though they do now from time to time.

I think the change is good also limiting the number of posts to much crap being posted

10/18/2006 08:56 PM by Bob Pavey,CRS (RE/MAX Hometown)

I definitely agree the Market Update Category would be a very useful tool. When I hit 'Associates Blogs' i can still view every type of listing anyone on my list has written.  Will that stay the same? I hope so. Many different ways of searching on here and I try to utilize them all at different times of the day....unless I'm actually out working of course!

10/18/2006 09:36 PM by Carole Cohen Realtor®, ePRO (Howard Hanna Cleveland City Office)

Great ideas!  Only comment I might offer is can you make it possible for a city to span multiple counties?  Thanx

10/18/2006 11:26 PM by Dan Jungclas (RE/MAX of Naperville)

I think it makes a lot of sense. There are so many good blogs that one cannot read them all, and having a list to consult (both for posting as well as to select what to read) is very helpful. Knowing about changes in advance is a must I think. I love seeing all the positive changes as the network grows and evolves. Can we post in more than one category if it makes sense, or both consumer and Realtor?

10/18/2006 11:44 PM by Jeff Dowler ~ Carlsbad Real Estate ~ 760-840-1360 (RE/MAX Associates)

I hope you will give examples of what goes where. There are some paosts that are not too esily categorized.

10/19/2006 12:05 AM by Wilmington NC Real Estate Ginger & Roger Sala Keller Williams (Keller Williams Wilmington North Carolina)

Jeff: Yes, you'll will be able to post to multiple catagories if the post is appropriate.  We'll probably have some built in restrictions to simply keep people from clicking on all of them (which happened all the time).

10/19/2006 12:57 AM by Matt Heaton (ActiveRain Corp.)

Another great addition in my opinion. It will make browsing and posting much more efficient when broken down.

The changes appear to be good for making it easier to find the type of information desired. My principal concern at this point is not to be so fragmented that is discourages utilization due to the numerous options.

10/19/2006 05:10 AM by Dave Rosenmarkle (Highland Realty)

Good idea. Real Estate opinions makes a lot of sense.

10/19/2006 05:47 AM by William Seufert (Florida List For Less Realty, Inc.)

I like it!  Keep up the good work guys.

10/19/2006 09:43 AM by Paul

Cool stuff i already see how these changes are getting to the consumers out there.....

10/19/2006 10:24 AM by Eddy Martinez (Nationwide Funding Group)

Wouldn't that depend on the topic of the rant, Cheryl? I can rant real estate as easily as why my Buccaneers are terrible this year. :-)

10/19/2006 11:05 AM by Jonathan Dalton (RE/MAX Desert Showcase)

I like this addition.  Any time you can organize information better I think it is a bonus.  It will save us all time finding the types of information that we are interested in.

10/19/2006 12:08 PM by Andrew Hodge (Right At Home Realty Inc.)

The break down of categories should also help SEs sort through all the information as well. I'll second or third the Market Update category.

10/19/2006 03:38 PM by Barnett Associates Real Estate, LLC

Makes sense and will give credence to the search engines when we want to post something for fun versus informational as well as being an asset for us to search great categories such as Tips,Tricks & Advice etc.

I still do feel that a link on our homepages with realtive do and don'ts might be helpful...examples are always nice.

And I'm still not getting my ActiveRain email updates.

Great idea! also glad you asked the community before making the change.

10/19/2006 05:58 PM by Ken Smith (Suburban House Hunters)

I like where you are heading with this.

Concerning the consumer subcategories...
I have posts that fall into more than one state (or county or city) as I am in a tri-state area. Will it be possible to select more than one "region"?   Otherwise, my only option will be the general consumer category.

Would also like to see something like an "Off-topic, Humor, etc." category on the Consumer side.

Thank you for your efforts on this and allowing us to provide feedback.

10/19/2006 09:22 PM by Lawrence Yerkes - Broker Associate, Southern New Jersey Real Estate Services (RE/MAX Suburban)

That looks like it will be more catagorized I like it

10/19/2006 09:58 PM by Rob Wills (Gilpin Realty Inc.)

Matt,

Medford & I are quite excited about this change—at last a couple of categories we can lurk in with our opinions & (we hope) humor)—and specific areas we may search for the all-important “blog food.”

Thanks, Jay & Medford

Good concept changes and since you answered other questions in later response I fully support the change.
