 Trying to keep up?

There will be an update to our blogging engine coming down the pipe.  Starting Sunday post point limits will be set at 10 posts per week scored at 200 points each.  We welcome you posting more, automated scoring will be limited to 10 per week.  The scheduled week will be Sunday through Saturday Central Standard Time.  Additional posts may still receive points manually per current practices.

It should be noted that the number of points awarded based on quality will be increased to offset the reduced number of scored posts.

We will still be selecting featured posts. In some cases we will still adjust points according to established criteria.  Of course, as always has been the case, we will not award credit for content that is copyrighted or simply copied from others. We look to you, The ActiveRain Community to help us monitor these things.

Please remember to follow the posting guidelines to hit your target audience

Watch here for any changes to this leading up to Thursday, and as always we welcome member feedback on these changes.

Update: Changed the start time to Sunday since it just makes more sense to start it at the beginning of the week.

Thanks for letting us know this is on the near horizon.  Is the 5 comment limit here to stay too??  I like how you made a weekly limit instead of a daily limit.  Thanks for that.  I think this is a really good change.

Thanks Caleb, I think this is a good change. Hopefully we'll see more thought put into posts & comments in the future.

I'll follow with MF. I like the change and look forward to seeing how it works.

10/16/2006 08:49 PM by Toby Boyce, MBA, Delaware Ohio (Keller Williams Consultants Realty)

I see this as a really positive change- thanks for listening to our suggestions.

Ines

10/16/2006 08:52 PM by Rick & Ines - Miami Shores Real Estate (Majestic Properties)

Basically the motivation behind this change is:

1. Try to cut down on junk posts by increasing the reward to quality vs. quantity.

2. Prevent people from feeling obligated to post 2-3 times a day to keep up in the points.  But if your posting great posts 2-3 times a day like some members are, we welcome it :)

We also want to keep it so that people have the potential to earn the same amount of points per week via posting, so that they don't feel at a disadvantage.

10/16/2006 08:57 PM by Matt Heaton (ActiveRain Corp.)

Ditto what MF said. I think this will help to challenge everyone to post quality over quantity, to stop and draft good content, instead of just trying to rack up points.

Limitted to 10 a week!!!!! I don't think I could write 10 posts in a week if my life depended on it. (well maybe) Good changes Matt. Quality, quality, quality. Can never have too much quality.

10/16/2006 09:10 PM by Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc

I like the change from daily to a weekly limit.  That sounds like it will work out better.

10/16/2006 09:13 PM by Michael DeMello, CRS, ABR, e-Certified (Prudential Americana Group, Realtors)

Yup.Yup. I think that this will really promote quality over quantity.

10/16/2006 09:16 PM by Mariana Wagner ~ Colorado Springs REALTORĀ® (Wagner iTeam -Keller Williams Clients' Choice)

I'm still looking for the "secret" ways to earn points in the FAQ. Are there still other ways that are not noted?

10/16/2006 09:38 PM by Karen Hurst ~ Real Estate Broker ~ Warwick ~ Rhode Island (Storm Realty LLC)

Sounds like sound reasoning to me. I am beginning to do more content blogs which take more time to review, use photos, and compile. I think comments would work as well.

10/16/2006 09:44 PM by Eric Bouler (Prudential Gardner)

Sounds resonable. now you won't have to worry about how many buy how good your post are.

10/16/2006 10:03 PM by Rob Wills (Gilpin Realty Inc.)

Thanks for the update, it sounds very positive and it is nice to see such thought put into the site....kudos to AR.

Cool. Could we also get a "no follow" tags put in on comment urls (at the option of the blog owner?).  We're not getting a lot of comment spam...yet, but give the spammers time they'll find us. -Charles

I agree with everything that has been said, this is a change for the better.  It will be interesting to see the impact this has on future blogging.

10/16/2006 10:36 PM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

Thanks for the heads up and the positive changes. Anything that can be done to continue to improve quality is a plus for us all! Whew, I couldn't write 10 posts a week on top of my other 3 blogs. Generous I think!

10/16/2006 11:02 PM by Jeff Dowler ~ Carlsbad Real Estate ~ 760-840-1360 (RE/MAX Associates)

Just wanted to say that I think this will be a healthy update for AR.  It seems as though the devs at AR are trying to promote healthy blogging practices, and giving points for all the things that the average blogger should be doing.  This sort of "teaches" people how to blog effectively.

3 posts per day is just too much for the average blogger to handle.  10/week is a much healthier pace, and hopefully this will reflect in the quality of the posts at AR.

10/16/2006 11:36 PM by Justin Smith - Blogging Coach {Blogging, SEO, SEM, SMO} (Real Estate Tomato)

I think this is a good rule to institute... especially spreading it out over the week so we can act "when inspired" and not "when we aren't"

I think the comment rule change may be to the detriment of the community, it's not enough points to make a difference, but it is enough to get people reading the blogs to respond to the.

I'm glad to see the limit spread out over a week. That makes it much more manageable than the daily blog treadmill.

10/17/2006 12:28 AM by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

I like the changes, should make for much better quality in posts.

One thought, it would be easier to start this on Sunday as that will be considered the "start" of the week. If not how many posts will be allow from this Thursday until Saturday?

10/17/2006 12:36 AM by Ken Smith (Suburban House Hunters)

Excellent change, but to some degree the horse is already out of the barn ...

As someone who came on just after the changes regarding scoring for associations, I thought it was a good idea ... but it didn't help me in chasing those who collected a lot of points the old way.

Same here ... I've fallen behing someone posting three a day every day for a week or two while I've been writing steadily over five weeks. I'm in favor or the change, but it will make it harder to catch those who passed us under the old rules.

10/17/2006 01:28 AM by Jonathan Dalton (RE/MAX Desert Showcase)

WOW, that's a lot of point coming from blogs alone. Shouldn't it be broken up into actual topic creations and then comments?

10/17/2006 01:51 AM by R. Chandler Smith (Choice Point Appraisals)

Guys...

Everytime you make a change it has been for the better... and fairness for all members.

I see new people coming on AR and jumping in the puddle. AND I have sadly seen people go, who I really enjoyed "knowing".

I hope these changes keeps more in the Rain.

10/17/2006 02:31 AM by Craig Schiller (REAL ESTAGING, a nationally recognized leader in Staging.)

Great- I've been here a little over a week now and if this helps cut down on the garbage posts it will be a big plus:

  • Oh isn't my husband the best hee, hee, hee
  • Oh isn't my wife just perfect!
  • Gee, look at the colors on this tree I saw on vacation
  • etc

Nothing wrong with being social, but there's too much c$%p.

Also, cracking down on the comments is great!  Maybe this will cut down on the 2 word 25 point ass-kiss.

10/17/2006 04:37 AM by PGA National, BallenIsles, Mirasol - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

Spreading limits to a weekly basis rather than daily is a great addition. Some days get so crazy for all of us that trying to get something done before midnight doesn't make sense.

There will always be some complaints, but I think all the changes you're making are for the good of the site, thus good for the group.

I like the comments, and like Angus, think limiting to 5 may not be good. Perhaps increasing the length of comments for points would eliminate the "I agrees"  and increase the useful comments.

In any case, THANKS for letting us know the rule changes before they happen!

I think I read a comment somewhere from Broker Bryant that posting a blog entry that will end up on  the left side of http://activerain.com/bloghome (the dashboard) should be the goal.... those with a number of entries on the left side seem to migrate over to the right side of  http://activerain.com/bloghome (the dashboard) even when they are relatively new to Active Rain.....

Looks like #1 on the right side of http://activerain.com/bloghome (the dashboard) never posts three a day...

"Caleb=Musing"

This is GREAT! I have been having so much trouble keeping up with all these posts. My Goodness. These changes are going to help us all.

How nice it will be to read "content" and more "content'...Hope it works! I for one  would like to see Blogs with a point instead of Blogs for a point.

Let me know if you ever decide to give up "musing". I want first dibs on that Blog Title. :> Take care.

>>>>it will make it harder to catch those who passed us under the old rules

Matt & Caleb:  The first thought I have is you could recalculate everyone's previous points based on the new system.

Which would make Teri fall from 90-something-K to 50-something-K.  Kristal would fall from 80-something-K to 40-something-K. I would fall to about 1-something-K.  Hey, I could handle that, but you might have some unhappy campers in AR Land.

My next, better, idea:  As soon as the top 3 hit the 100k mark, throw a big cyber-party, and then re-set everyone to zero, and we all start fresh under the new points system.

10/17/2006 06:03 AM by Cheryl Johnson, Bob Taylor Properties, Inc., Los Angeles, CA

Good idea.  While we all want to rack up those points, I think the high points summaries can be daunting for new users.I think it will also help to increase quality posts here.

10/17/2006 06:48 AM by Mary McKnight (1parkplace)

Cheryl,

Hopefully, this will weed out those posters who feel compelled to write about "NOTHING" in hopes of scoring points.

The reward system works. Those who have interesting topics to share with others will continue to write, regardless if points are involved.

I here do much about junk posts. I see there are all kinds of remarks about junk blogs. I have tried to give all kinds of good information. There is so many types of blogs, subjects, lengths. Is longer better, I dont know I dont like reading the real long ones. Is SEO and web stuff better?

I think that realestate stuff for the public is better because it could bring the public to our site and make this informaitonal. I have posted all kinds and had lots of good comments.

But this is the first time Im blogging so I could use some information and feed back and a spell checker too.

10/17/2006 10:07 AM by Christine Adler (Adler Realty)

I think this is a great change!  There are too many times when people are blogging two and three sentences, especially when those blogs should go on the forum.  I try to read many of the blogs each day, but I can't keep up.  I'm a slow reader!!  I think limiting the posts will help a lot as people will stop trying to hit 3 a day.  It's also good to have the weekly limit because sometimes you have nothing to say, and some days you have lots!

10/17/2006 11:21 AM by Donna Harris, ASP (Re/Max HiNet)

Yes,

let's go after content as it's King/Queen. And, the points? Well, it's just an artifical thing.

If I read a Blog posting and feel that I want to comment I will...doesn't matter if points are rewarded.

So, just have to combine speed reading/speed posting and speed typing!

Caleb: Excellent move--and it will have to make your job easier as well. I can't imagine the drudgery of trying to separate the wheat from the chaff with so many blogs.

Now you'll have time to devote to more great features! The pressure never let's up, does it?;-)

I have never looked into the Forums.  I suppose most of our social type conversations could be taking place there, instead of on the blogs.  Anyone have any tips for using the forums, especially good sections, whatever?

10/17/2006 02:04 PM by Cheryl Johnson, Bob Taylor Properties, Inc., Los Angeles, CA

Cheryl... the forums are not members only.  I found me on the web asking stupid questions as a newbie...

Maybe that has changed.. Could change. I think many use members only in the blogs for privacy.

Actually I was not asking a stupid question.. I was whining.

10/17/2006 02:21 PM by Maureen McCabe - Central Ohio real estate (Real Living HER)

I'm a short timer, but have found some of the blogs informative and useful. On the agent side of active rain; however, I like seeing agents spending blogging time in front of their computers. It keeps them off the street so that I can do more business.

I appreciate Administer Comments and updates like this. So often, with some of the other social/professional networking sites to which I have belonged, there is no advance notification as to pending changes and then chaos breaks loose on the site when those changes just happen and every member is left trying to wade through the changes. Thanks for the heads up!

10/24/2007 01:07 PM by Wes Guptill (Express Mortgage Services, LLC)

Hey Wes you do realize this was posted in 2006?  Not a recent change.   They do keep us informed pretty good on ActiveRain but there may have been changes since October 2006.

Posted by ActiveRain Real Estate Network on 10/16/2006

I think it is still 10 posts a week for points but I am not 100% sure... and I can not say that some of the details in the post have changed in the past year. AR was featuring, then there were volunteer moderators, now AR is featuring again and hiring an editor? Nothing here about scoring or ranking but there is no more scoring or ranking, that's a recent change and AR did post about that and the future of how that will be changed in about a month.  It keeps changing.

10/24/2007 01:18 PM by Maureen McCabe - Central Ohio real estate (Real Living HER)

It makes sense Caleb. We may see fewer posts but perhaps it will push us to raise the bar.
