It is important to be very organized in the process of building your own home. You will need to maximize your time and be efficiently aware of everything around you. You will become your own project manager and you will have to be available to make sudden decisions when and if they arise. Try to have all other instances of your life on hold while your new house is being built, because it will be taking up most of your time. Also make sure to have some sort of pager or cell phone in case of any emergencies.
In the beginning, gather a book with ideas that you have for designs for each room. During the building process keep them on hand for any updating while your new home is getting built. Fill this book with color ideas, wall paper patterns, sizes of rooms, and what the intended use for each room will be. This is important for keeping the design process organized and thorough. You might want to hire a personal designer, however it is not necessary.
Keep going back to the book of ideas that you have been keeping and compare and contrast what is actually happening in each room in the process. Many additional ideas can be found online for certain decorating purposes and designs. When something arises that is of interest to you do not be afraid to speak up. Paying for the wrong shade and having it applied to your walls can require the burden of buying new paint and repainting it yourself. If a problem with color or something comes up let the representative of that problem know right away and have it corrected.
