I love thunderstorms.

iphoneI am sitting on my deck in WV. It's pouring down rain and my wife is on my laptop. I have decided to take this opportunity to use one of the best features of the new iPhone, a true web browser. So, I can just write a post right from the iPhone.

Of course ActiveRain does not support wysiwyg editing in the Safari browser, so I have to use the HTML editor. That is a bit of a pain, but it does give me a chance to practice my two thumb typing. :)

I have a comprehensive review of the iPhone coming

It is partially written, but I want to test it more before publishing. I could just say it's great, but that wouldn't serve anyone well. This is the first chance I've had to try typing with both thumbs and already, after just these few sentences, it is coming very quickly.

My wife has been using this feature more than me. When I've been on the laptop, has been on the iPhone updating her CafeMom comments. She has become quite proficient already, and now I can see why. The keys are very sensitive, but predictable. And it guessed I was spelling predictable before I completed the word, so that helps as well.

If I could use the wysiwyg features right now, this would actually be very easy to use. Even as it is, my biggest issues right now are shifting to get HTML tags and these darned Mosquitos! I think they are attracted to the iPhone light. And the ithch of the poison oak on my legs and arms.

Would I do this again?

Yes. Even without the wysiwyg editor. But with it, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. The iPhone gives me a full browser, not a watered down .mobi version. I've saved this to draft a couple of times already to check my coding. I can see exactly how it's going to look. I have also entered my tags and chosen the groups. I love the dial the iPhone gives you for pull down menus.

It's been a night of testing for me. Earlier I tested the new blog editing features of the Flock browser update. I was able to publish to our self-hosted blog at RealEstateShows.com, but not to my CA2WV blog on Blogger. I considered it a failed test.

I consider this one a success.

EDIT: I've come back to add this video to answer the comments about typing speed. This is video I shot of my wife the other night. She's actually faster now. It took me only a few sentences to get to this speed as well. (And this should deal with Bob's "wall of words" issue.) :) And I added a photo... in case you've been living under a rock and haven't seen the iPhone yet.

Ooohhh, I'm so jealous.  My son just got one, and it makes my Treo look like a dinosaur!

I'm stuck in my Sprint contract for several more months, unfortunately.  So, I'll just sit back and drool over all the fun everyone else will be having with their brand new i-Phones.

07/10/2007 11:59 PM by Jeannie Kontis - Lancaster Real Estate, Lancaster PA Homes for Sale (Long & Foster Real Estate, Lancaster PA)

Hey jeff, tell me more , I hope that it is an awesome phone to buy, thanks for the info :)

07/10/2007 11:59 PM by Aurora Colorado Real Estate Ray Saenz, Colorado Realtor (United Property Brokers, INC)

So you like the iPhone web browser, but what about the cell phone quality?  I know I'm getting ahead of your complete review...but as the say curiosity killed the cat!  Besides, just yesterday someone told me that they had heard that there were lots of problems with the iPhone.

07/11/2007 12:04 AM by Renee L Norton (Keller Williams Realty)

wow jeff...I want you to put the iphone down and back away from the table....  it is a very seductive and dangerous toy that can suck you in and possess you...Be careful!!

07/11/2007 12:08 AM by Scott Hoag (Gulf & Southern Mortgage)

Jeannie... well, this was not designed to make you jealous, but I'm glad you are. :)

Ray... I do like it. As I said, it has some missing parts, which I'll explain in more detail, but overall, it's killer.

Renee... :) I've found the sound quality to be exceptional, but my last phone was a true dinosaur, older than Jeannie's Treo! The web browser is just that, a web browser. I've experienced the web on other phones and it's nothing like this. I'm commenting now from my laptop, but I could just as easily be doing this from the iPhone. As I mentioned, the drawback is support for Safari. AR has never had it. Maybe they'll consider it now.  :)

07/11/2007 12:09 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Scott... LOL. If I had an addictive personality, I could understand that entirely. Already down. Now... off to bed. :)

07/11/2007 12:10 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Interesting comment.... first one I've seen from someone in the profession.  Not being a Mac/Apple person (my MP3 player is a Zen Micro by Creative) I'm curious as to how it would compare to my Windows based Motorola Q, which for me, is a real disappointment.

For someone like me who has always felt Macs are actually HARDER to use, the antithesis of the product line, would you say it would be a relatively easy transition?

By the way... I used RealEstateShows for a year, but had to let it lapse due to a co-branding conflict.  I'm working with a different lender now... I sure miss using your product!

07/11/2007 12:10 AM by John Mayne & Associates (Coldwell Banker Previews International)

John... you're one of a small minority who feel the way you do after using a Mac for any length of time. I'd go to an Apple store or AT&T store and play with it. You'll know right away.

As for RES, let's talk. The co-branding issue should not stand in your way.

07/11/2007 12:12 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Jeff, it must have taken quite a bit of patience to write this post on the IPhone.  Hmmmm

07/11/2007 12:25 AM by Pasadena CA Real Estate - Irina Netchaev (Keller Williams International Realty)

I've tried talking to your customer service people - very pleasant and professional, but not able to satisfy my needs and what I was trying to accomplish.  In fact, I believe it was just last month, perhaps May when my first year expired.

If this is, in fact, a negotiable issue, I'm more than interested.

Transforming me to an Mac man... let's just say I have more hope of renewing my service with you than I have for using the "easy" Apple platform...

07/11/2007 12:32 AM by John Mayne & Associates (Coldwell Banker Previews International)

Wow, finally a reason for me to pull away from the computer and ActiveRain.  I can take it on the road!  iPhone here I come :)

Lexa

07/11/2007 12:40 AM by Lexa Montierth (Currently Looking)

i cannot wait until the iphone price comes down (but probably by then there's something better than comes out) and when i am able to switch services when my contract ran out.

it's funny how technology have changed our lives and the way we do our business. now with iphone, you can do practically everything on the phone and it's slowly taking away the need of our laptops. i feel restless without my blackberry and i can't sit down without an hour just quietly doing my work without checking my emails. it's a habit i am trying to break. technology has definitely make me a slave of my own emails.

cheers,

cindy

Man, I have so much trouble using little keypads, like on my cell and similar devices that I think I would have a heck of a time negotiating the web, and enjoying it. Good news is my house has two computers so one is always free.

07/11/2007 12:54 AM by Steven L. Smith, Bellingham, Wa. Home Inspector (King of the House Home Inspection)

We're just gonna call you Gadget Guy.  Blog Boy and Gadget Guy.  You two are a pair.  Sounds like you're having fun.

07/11/2007 01:01 AM by ARDELL DellaLoggia (Coldwell Banker Bain)

Are you telling me that even mosquitos want the iphone?

07/11/2007 01:02 AM by Rick & Ines - Miami Shores Real Estate (Majestic Properties)

Jeff:

Oh my gosh but you're a patient man and driven.  I love your "I am Blogging as fast as I can" keyboard bongo player.  Is he on vacation on some desert island or is that your back yard.

As I just got my treo will stick with it for awhile.. but the phone really does look good.. by the time I get around to buying a new phone the bugs should be long gone..

07/11/2007 01:27 AM by Manhattan Beach CA/ e-PRO..... Kaye Thomas... (Real Estate West)

I have been with the Treo forever, it still has bugs.  Unfortunately most of the software I use is Palm.  It will take awhile for me to make that leap.  I need to sync with Outlook for now also.  I am assuming that the iPhone will not be doing that.

07/11/2007 02:33 AM by Randy L. Prothero - Hawaii REALTOR® (Century 21 Liberty Homes)

Jeff, are you now introducing us to mobile blogging ? God help us, glad it worked.

07/11/2007 05:20 AM by Missy Caulk-Ann Arbor- Realtor(R)- Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams-Ann Arbor)

I'm just curious.  Men usually complain that their fingers are too big to type on a phone.  Do you find that to be an obstacle with the iPhone?

07/11/2007 05:35 AM by Chris Elizabeth Griffith ~ Bonita Springs Fl Real Estate (Keller Williams Elite Realty, Bonita Springs, FL)

This is good to know, I am glad the technology is coming out to handle full web browsing and things like writing our blogs.  This sure will come in handy.

07/11/2007 05:49 AM by Bradenton Real Estate - Linda Reynolds

Hi Jeff,

I thought about buying one...but I usually am the first Guinea pig when a new gadget comes out and I always pay the most for it...then the prices come down..I did this as being one of the first to have a Razor phone...I ended up changing to a Blackberry and I still have some stuff to learn on it. Not sure I will go to Iphone..and I am tempted..but my wife will say "is it necessary?" :)

07/11/2007 06:32 AM by Neal Bloom-Realtor ® Assoc.-CRS-Weston FL (RE/MAX Premier Associates)

Wall of words!!!! no pictures...boring.. :)  Can't wait for the review, can't say I am going out right away to buy it.  I'm glad to see you have cell coverage on Turner Road.  Or I would have visions of you portraying Robin Williams in RV.  Standing on some high rocks with your arm reached out.

07/11/2007 07:41 AM by Bob Carney Licensed MD/PA Real Estate Agent (Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.)

No more WV jokes, Bob.  I'll come after you.

07/11/2007 07:58 AM by Sarah Cooper (Real Estate Shows)

John... I'll give you a call.

Lexa... but you won't really be "away."  :)

07/11/2007 08:24 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Cindy Lin... it would be easy to allow this to make you  a slave. My goal is to make it my slave.

07/11/2007 08:25 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Irina... you'd be surprised how fast I did this. What slowed me down more than the iPhone was not being able to use the wysiwyg editor. I'm going to edit the post  and add a video I shot of my wife typing on it. As with anything new, it takes a few days to get use to the new keyboard design... but once you do, it works great.

07/11/2007 08:27 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Jeff  - What a perfect way to enjoy a good thunderstorm!

07/11/2007 08:45 AM by Indianapolis Real Estate | Paula Henry (ReMax Excel)

Steve... i have meaty claws as well, but the keyboard is very responsive, so only the tips of your finger need to touch it. Back at home, where I have 5 computers, it would be my last resort.

Ardell... more fun than an adult should be allowed to have.

Ines... I'm saying they wanted me! :)

Ken... actually, I'm an extremely impatient man. That's why I'm always looking for simpler and faster and for ways to maximize my time.

Kaye and Randy... I'll assume you both sync from Outlook. The iPhone does as well.

Missy... we were already in trouble.

Chris... it took a little bit, but I like it now.

Linda... it will come in handy when I'm in a bind.

Neal... need?

Bob... we ran pole up the side of a tree and attached some tin foil to it... signal seems pretty good, but it gets bogged down on photos. Maybe some more tin foil.

Sarah... he's just jealous.

07/11/2007 08:52 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Jeff - I am just waiting for the green light from you before I go buy one..    I have a Cingular 8525 (don't see anyone with these) and I really do love it... but I don't know this Iphone looks so much sleeker and I have to compare the features - Love to know your thoughts

07/11/2007 09:02 AM by Desiree Daniels New Jersey Real Estate (609) 448-2222 (RE/MAX Tri County)

07/11/2007 09:40 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Look!  It is Jeff's impression of Harajuku Blogging!

does this mean we'll soon get a safari supported version of realestateshows.mobi ?

I've wanted to talk about *.mobi blogging for a while now but I honestly think that there are too many Razrs still out there with real estate agents... and palm based Treos...

07/11/2007 10:13 AM by Boca Raton & Lake Worth Florida Real Estate Broker

David... :)  NO! on the RealEstateShows.mobi, but yes on RealEstateShows.com RSS feeds in many formats. So, you'll be able to do anything you want. With the iPhone, I can now update my Shows on RES. :)  When the new flash plugin comes out from adobe, Katie bar the door!

07/11/2007 10:41 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

I really thought I was humbling myself when I put my SIM back in my phone from my blackjack... but now I'm mobi commenting and facebooking from my samsung sync...

all these capabilities are nuts...

now you're going to go work on a way to take pictures with mobi phones and upload to RES to post on the fly, right!?

07/11/2007 10:52 AM by Boca Raton & Lake Worth Florida Real Estate Broker

David... that's possible. :)

07/11/2007 11:34 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

great to see it in use.  Looking forward to your complete review.

07/11/2007 01:04 PM by Tina Howell, Realtor® Frisco & Celina Real Estate (RE/MAX First Realty II)

Jeff, when you do your review, can you please let us know if you think it was worth it to change providers? We are using t-mobile with a 10-line business plan. There would be quite a cost and headache to change, porting 10 numbers from t-mobile to cingular would be headache enough, and I want to see if it would be worth it just to get the iphone. Also, have you heard any rumors about whether or not any other carriers will be able to carry the iphone down the road?

07/11/2007 01:05 PM by John Evarts (Classic Property Management of Santa Clarita)

Tina... I'll have the full review soon.

John... I can tell you right now it would NOT be worth it. It's one of the issues I have with Apple's choices. You can't sign up an account with the iPhone on a business account. It's stupid. Straight out.

Fran... yes, you do. :)

07/11/2007 01:12 PM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Jeff - While hanging out at the apple store the other day (it seems my disc drive has died - not to worry they are replacing it) it was an iPhone frenzy.  The only complaints that I heard is that you can't send IM's on the iPhone and you can't get internet access everywhere.  I'm sure you knew this but I, like several angry customers, thought that you could just browse the internet anywhere.  The Genius explained that you still have to be in range of a wireless network jut like a laptop.

Can't wait to see your full review, I'm planning on living vicariously.

07/11/2007 01:49 PM by Maureen Henry - Rockland Home Staging (www.rocklandhomestaging.com)

Whew... Pictures!!!  Thanks Jeff.  I will send you some more Tin Foil!!!

Sarah...I didn't say a word about WV :) (but if the shoe fits, if you have shoes? oooh)

07/11/2007 02:04 PM by Bob Carney Licensed MD/PA Real Estate Agent (Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.)

Maureen... your genius needs a bit more info on how the iPhone works. You can access the web in two ways. If you are near a wireless network, like in your home in at a starbucks, etc, you can join and use it's higher bandwidth. If you're not, then the phone uses it's built in wireless capabilities to access the Edge network on AT&T. This is available across most of the country and expanding. You also can send SMS text messages from the phone. It's not iChat, but it functions similarly.

Bob... that's West By God Virginia to you!

07/11/2007 04:01 PM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Thanks for the review and the video Jeff. I am seriously considering an iphone and your reviews are extremely helpful.

Thanks! ;-)

ooooh get some Benadryl!  We JUST did that mosquito thing, and they ARE attracted to the lights.  Make sure your Repellant has a LARGE amount of DEET (like DEEP woods off) with like 25% DEET. Makes a BIG difference... Have fun, and enjoy your new iPhone

I can see how that phone could be very addictive.   A friend just recently bought it and I was surprised at how light it is.  It seems very cool!

His only comment as far as the typing is that his thumbs are two big, which makings typing very challenging for him.  Other than that he really likes it.

07/12/2007 12:40 PM by Ana Connell (Exit Family Realty)

Tool Boy or Hubba or Jeff Turner...

Thanks a lot. Now I wants that phone. I do not needs the phone. But me wants it and me wants it bad.

Me will have Blog Boy send you the bill. You can pitch in and that phone can be my birthday present :)

Cha-Ching. I told you my birthday was going to cost you. SVW and LOL.

TLW...ROAR!

Love this thing!  My husband was tellling me about it and said I needed to get this instead of a Blackberry.

Thanks!

Laurie... thank you. That was awesome.... now, what bar?

TLW [SVW]... first you need to buy a mac and dump that PC that keeps giving you problems!

Jeanette... Go Mountaineers!

07/12/2007 10:39 PM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Nice.  I can do the same from my balckberry and i have.  Should have thought to blog about it. :)

07/13/2007 07:06 AM by Teresa Boardman (Keller Williams)

iPhone looks pretty cool.  Too bad they are not available in Canada Yet.  I think before the end of the year.  Can't wait for the review.

The bar is not there now, the widget you have on the side 'Random Books' was displayed across the top of the blog page for awhile.   function contact(aid) { //documentation on this: http://prototype-window.xilinus.com/documentation.html var win = new Window('modal_window', {className: "dialog", title: "Contact", top:30, left:30, width:720, height:580, zIndex:150, url: "/agents/contact?id=" + aid, opacity:1, resizable: true}) win.setDestroyOnClose(); win.show(true); }

Odd... AR guys must have been playing with code.

07/13/2007 03:52 PM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Jeff - I have found that you can really only listen to half of what the "Genius's" at the apple store have to say.  They are good for basic stuff but if you want to learn anything advanced you really have to figure it out on your own.  Thanks for clearing that up.

07/14/2007 11:12 AM by Maureen Henry - Rockland Home Staging (www.rocklandhomestaging.com)

Jeff - David Podgursky has just teed one up for you. When are we going to see a video on how to post to RES on the fly?

07/14/2007 10:21 PM by David L. Britt, MBA (The Heritage Real Estate Team)

Jeff, what are your monthly costs for your iPhone service? I've been thinking about buying one for my son, a REALTOR® in a tiny town on a very limited budget, so I wouldn't want to cripple him with high service bills.

By the way, I'm with Maureen on the subject of the so-called "geniuses" at the Mac store. We stopped asking questions when my husband and I realized that we had been using Macs longer than most of them had been out of diapers.

07/15/2007 02:24 PM by Shelly Fagin (Realasites.com)

Cool to see the video. I thought maybe you guys would include a hidden message in her typing - so I of course had to pay attention to what she was typing.... I think I caught "started writing a few..." with a spelling error. Wasn't very exciting. Shouldn't she have been typing "active rain is so awesome" :) just playing

Ok.  I am a total MacHead, in fact I have my windows and Mac laptops open right now at a coffee shop in Astoria, Oregon.  But, as many Apple products as I have (AppleTV, iMac, MacBookPro, G5 Desktop, iPods, etc, etc.) I was waiting until the 2nd release of the iPhone just in case there were some kinks that had to be worked out.

I just read your blog.

I just bought an iPhone.

Damn you!  Making it look so cool that I can't wait.  Now I'll probably end up getting the next version too and giving the one that should arrive in about 2 days to my wife (maybe), but Apple just got at least another 1200 bones from me...and I am happy to pay.

I know I'll be even happier when I post my first blog from my iPhone.

Thanks for helping me spend my money.

Like Darren (was), I am waiting to see what the Holiday season brings for the iPhone. Everytime the iPhone commercials come on TV I say to my kids, "Look everyone!  There's Daddy's Christmas present. Hint. Hint."  Perhaps they'll come though.  Otherwise I know what I'll be buying for "the business" day after.  ;-)

EDIT:  just discovered how to enhance the hints ... http://www.gifttagging.com/

07/21/2007 01:35 PM by Jeff Weir (TourTheTriad.com)

Darren... Except the the II FX I paid over $9000 for on the first day it came out back in 1990, I have never regretted any purchase I've ever made from Apple. Even when newer technology came out the next week. :)

Jeff... what a Merry Christmas it will be.
