With the national news being loaded with happenings of girls missing and being abducted this is the perfect time to remember that a real estate agents safety while showing properties is very important.

My reasons for staying safe are in the picture below.  Of course the photographer is another big reason too.  I attend karate classes each week and learn self defense along with the sport karate.  It is very empowering for me .

Below are some safety pointers that all agents should consider and add to their showing "regimen".

  1. Always be alert to verbal and non-verbal clues from your clients as you talk with them that alert you or make you uneasy, trust your instincts.
  2. If possible, show clients properties before dark.  Bad guys prefer the dark due to visibility.  If you are comfortable taking clients to see properties after dark, make sure you check in with someone before and after you show the property.  When there, turn on all lights and open all blinds and doors.
  3. When you enter a home, leave the front door open.  This creates an escape route in case something violent was to occur.  This also allows for neighbors to hear you better.
  4. Never enter a room or confined space before the client.  You can remain at the door or entrance.
  5. Wear shoes that are easy to run in.  Don't wear concealing or confining clothing.
  6. Carry your cell phone at all times while in the property.
  7. Have the property's address you are showing memorized if possible.  If you have to call 9-1-1 you will be able to give specific information.
  8. Hide all your valuables in your trunk before you client arrives.  And ladies, don't carry your purse into the property.
  9. Remember, that if attacked, use anything and everything at your disposal.  Kick, bite, scratch, punch,  anything to get you away from the attacker and escape to the nearest place of safety.  Your elbow is the hardest part of your body, use it if you can.
  10. Try to always park on the side of the road near the property.  This will make it easier for you to escape because you won't be trapped by any other vehicles.  It also brings the fight or struggle out on the roadway making it more visible to witnesses.
  11. Call the police immediately.

Something that I have my agents do for me as an added safety measure is complete an identification form.  A picture of it is below.

This gives me information about my agents in case they call the office in distress or they don't check in.  Then I can call the police or 9-1-1 and be able to direct them to my agent easier.

Safety is important for all of us.  Be Safe.

I forgot to ask for critique.  If anyone has anything they see that could be improved, I'd appreciate the comment.

Thanks,

I think realtors in general take safety too lightly.  I just attended a Real Estate Assault class a couple of weeks ago and what an eye opener.  I wrote a three part blog after I finished that class because the message is so important.  Just look at the news, everyday there's another female missing, kidnapped, murdered and of course, males too.  But more often than not, the females are the majority for attacks.  Realtors are sitting ducks and we must take precautions.  Thanks for another reminder.  Great post.

Hi Kathy -

I like the post - good quality content.  Add a picture or two.   Something that might draw the reader in.

I like the numbered list, maybe bold the words or items you feel are the most important.

Good Start!

Donna - I attend karate classes with my younger son.  Along with sport karate, our sensei teaches us self defense moves.  It's a great way for me to keep active as well as learn to protect myself.

Mike - Thank you for the pointers.  I'm just about done with the revision.  I have added a photo of my reason for staying alert and safe, as well as bolding key words.  I'll be sending it out to various groups.  Look for it.

We have a code word that we use in our office. If we call and say the code word they know to send someone ASAP.

Vicki,

A code word is a good idea too.  I'm sure it is something that doesn't relate to real estate.  That is best as its meaning won't be missed when the word is said.

Very good point. Here in Las Vegas, where I work with a large Real Estate Broker company, the real estate agends don't held Open Houses. We show the properties per the request of clients who were previously verified by the main office. In addition I myself take all the precautions to be safe.
