This is a post that will helpfully shed some light on the massive amount of information available on Active Rain as well as help each of us as we weed through the maze of ideas, of tips, hints, and people that we are introduced to on Active Rain. I'm sharing just "some" of the amazing stuff I've learned and am still learning on this wonderful meeting place. Hopefully, you will share anything else that I haven't covered that is especially meaningful or helpful to you. I've only come up with 40, so see if some of you can come up with more.

My kuddos to Active Rain and to all of the wonderfully talented, knowledgeable and gentle people here who are willing to share, share, share. I've learned so much and will still continue to learn. I actually posted a blog on my own individual site about the need for staging - also learned from this venue. Just some things I've learned:

1.   I've learned what an Avatar is and how to design a new "me" with http://www.meez.com/

2.  I've learned about http://www.vflyers.com/  and about http://www.postlets.com/ both of which allow me to put together a really cool flyer to post online including Craig's List.

3.  I've learned more ideas of posting cool information about communities, about personal stuff, as well as a virtual tour on http://www.realestateshows.com/

4.  I've learned that if I am planning to get at least 200 points for a post, I need to have 50 words - didn't know that until after I posted one with less

5.   I've learned that I need at least 10 words to get my 25 points for responding to a comment

6.  I've learned that when someone does comment on my post, that the polite thing to do is to acknowledge their comment and thank them for stopping by

7.  I've learned there is lots of uninteresting posts (probably many of mine included)

8.  I've learned about other parts of the country via posts displaying community and state information for Localism

9.  I've learned that there is an "edit" button on my comments so that if there's something else I want to say, I can edit it there instead of writing another comment (thanks to Brad Andersohn)

10.  I'm still learning how to put photos into my blogs, and recently into comments, albeit at the "early" stages of learning since I haven't figured out how to line them up nicely

11.   I've learned that if you want 200 points for each post, you can only post ten per week

12.  I've learned that if you write good content and get lots of comments, your 200 points can increase substantially

13.  I've learned that I can't read everything that is posted

14.   I've learned that Active Rain can be very time consuming and somewhat addictive

15.  I've learned that there are lots of great people who will take time to help out newbies and those that don't know how

16.  I've learned that if I want to know how to do something, it's probably somewhere on AR

17.  I've learned to subscribe to those individuals whose posts I particularly enjoy

18. I've learned to bookmark for future reference those posts with oodles of information

19.  I've learned to rate those posts that are particularly special

20.  I've learned to select groups that fit my particular preferences and to read what the group is about so I don't mistakenly post an inappropriate blog in that group

21.  I've learned to delete my comments from my list every day because I've bookmarked my favorites

22. I've learned it's not nice to put a link in a comment directing the reader to my website (I didn't do that, but I read that it's not nice)

23.  I've learned that it does matter what information you put into your profile

24. I've learned that "whatever" I post on Active Rain will be read by consumers as well as real estate professionals

25. I've learned how to place a Grazr  widget  on my blog - thanks to the great instructions of Jeff Turner http://activerain.com/blogsview/96624/Add-Your-Other-Blogs

26.  I've learned that when I add an associate, I make a nice comment

27.  I've learned that it takes a LOT of time to learn stuff and get to know who your favorites are

28.  I've learned to watch for newbies, welcome them aboard and to dig around on the old posts by my favorite bloggers

29. I've learned how little I know

30.  I haven't yet learned where to find all of those pictures - other than the photographs taken by the blogger - to emphasize a point or create some interest or highlight a topic

31.  I've learned what a love link is from Brad Andersohn

32.  I've learned more about Localism from great people. Do not post it in the groups. Post it in your state, city, county, community. Click on Localism, choose, and then post it there.

33.  I've learned that you can post your listing, but you won't get points.

34.  I've learned that things change on Active Rain and not to get upset

35.  I've learned that you can only post to five groups

36.  I've learned to put plenty of white space in your blogs or else we don't read them

37.  I've learned that many people bold their stuff, but haven't figured out why yet

38.  I've learned that negativism is definitely OUT and positive is absolutely IN

39.  There's more, believe me, but I wanted to give some of you a head's up.

40.  I've learned that uploading a picture/clipart is a challenge and won't accept a wmf but only a jpg or gif

Okay, that's 40. Anyone want to add one of their favorites to this list?

41.  Brad shared http://www.glittermaker.com/ which allowed me to put my Lady In Red on my blog. Thanks Brad :-)

42.  Angie Vandenbergh added: "I've learned that all the people blogging on this site are not just people trapped in my computer. They are real and out there in the world." Thanks Angie. That's what's called a link love or love link......I think. :-)

43.  As of today no points for non-original jokes with less than 50 words of original content. Really, no joking! :-)

44. Joanne Hanson suggested the "search" button to find articles on specific items such as grazr, etc. as well as search for a topic or a person. Great addition Joanne, thanks.

Teri, great stuff!  I've learned from your 40 things that I still have alot to learn!  Learning everyday - though if I have learned one thing.... its that AR can be addictive!

Let me be the first to say..  AWESOME POST!!  Bookmarked with a 6...I mean a 5!  I'd give you a 10 if I could!  Thanks for the link love back, and I like your widgets.  There's a little text that slipped by after your meez, (you can just delete the text I think) and if you don't want your links and keywords centered, you can use the html <center>and at the end of your html, use</center>. This will center your widgets, but not your links and keywords.

What a great post!  I predict 50 comments on this one and possibly a featured post for the:

Teri - #33 if you post your listing to a group...no points!  If you post it as a new blog post, 200 points!  :-)  If you exceed 10 per week on listings...who cares about points!!  LOL

41.  I've learned that you've learned a lot of great stuff on Active Rain and that...

42.  You've learned what "Paying It Forward" means!  Very Nice!!

You sure have learned a lot here in learning every day to and I'm sure there will be lots more to learn. Thank goodness.

Catherine - thanks for dropping by.  And yes, AR IS addictive.

Brad - cutie pie.....can I say that on AR? Thank you sooooo much for your help. I LOVE glitter post. I want that!!! Can I make that myself?  I'll have to add that to the list. AND thank you for your lightbulb........ Okay is that a link love or a love link? Okay, cool about the html center stuff. Good idea. Couldn't stay away, huh? I thought you were leaving, but AR just keeps us comin back doesn't it? I like your numbers 40, 41 and 42 Brad. So Brad, if I get over 50 comments, how many points do you think? AND another thing? Didn't you just love that movie, Pay it Forward?

Bob, glad you used the ten words...........thanks for dropping by and for the kind words!

Michael, thank so much for dropping by. I appreciate your taking the time to read and post.

Teri, that is a really great list. I found myself reminicing a little through various blogs on those topics. Here's one to add...

I've learned that all the people blogging on this site are not just people trapped in my computer. They are real and out there in the world.

People may laugh at that - because we all know that all the people are real and not just in the computer. However when you only interact online, sometimes it is easy to forget feelings and intentions.

Angie, thanks so much. I will add your's as number 41 since no one has come up with another good one. Oh, yeah, Brad did contribute the glitter.com. So your's will be 42.

HI Teri:  Well I learned something tonight.  I did not know you needed 10 words to get points, although that could be because I tend to be wordy.  I also did not know you need at least 50 words for a post but again I tend to be wordy there also.

Thanks for sharing!

06/23/2007 09:25 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Marchel, thanks for stopping by. Glad you learned something new. Typically I don't just say Good post, but many do. Maybe that's why the 10 word post. I did post a Memorial Day Real Estate Show, but since I didn't have 50 words, no credit; however, I DID get credit because people responded.

Hey Sally. Really? Wow!! That is so cooooooool. Thanks for letting me know. :-)

06/23/2007 10:26 PM by Mesa, Arizona Real Estate *** Teri Ellis, Broker, ABR,CRS,GRI,ePRO,MRE (Homes Arizona Real Estate LLC)

Oh hey Teri, speaking of Grazr.. can you add that Widget to a normal webpage, i.e. to attract attention to your blog from your own website...?  Also, can you show only localism posts if you want to just show the very specific, and relevant area information and listing announcements?  THANKS!  (still trying to figure out what a love link is, lol)

06/23/2007 11:44 PM by Catherine Myers, Walnut Creek, CA Real Estate (Alain Pinel Realtors)

Catherine, I don't know about the grazr thing, but I would imagine so. Check on Jeff Turner's blog linked in my post and check out his instructions. The link on this profile is to the blog on my website. I was thinking of doing the same thing to put directly on my website(s), so we'll have to find out.

Yes, to your second question, I think. When you post to localism, it should be specific to area - state, county, city, community. Some of mine are just for state and county, some for state, county and city, etc. Hopefully that helps out.

A love link is that little link under Brad's name which will take you directly to his profile. So, you go to his profile page, and use the link at the top, highlight his name in the post, and copy that link. He posted a love link on one of his blogs with my name in it. I returned the favor :-) This is funny.......ME answering questions on AR! LOL!

Hope this helps........<big smile>

Teri....  This was an excellent post in so many different ways. I am very tired, hence why I didn't read any of the comments. I might stop by tomorrow. But to answer # 37, why people bold. Well, I am sure some do it to catch your attention. But it also helps the search engines. You usually want to bold your key words. Anytime you bold, italicize, or underline a word, this is good for google. At least from what I have learned.  nite

Teri, this is a great post for me. I only started a couple of months ago and it is easy to get caught up reading other post and writing one occasionally without exactly understanding how the points work. I do follow Jeff Turner religiously and I have learned alot from him!

I still don't understand so much  but this post really helps. Thanks

Teri,

I am truly impressed with the amount of learning you have done! This is definitely a feature post to me, it actually teaches a lot to all of us who have not yet learned everything! Not only have you been "learning" but you also take the time out to welcome others. At the risk of sounding cliche', Great post!

Jeff, thank you so much for dropping by and for your comment. So, you say, that bolding helps google find us? Interesting.....let me know if you find out any more details on that. Sometimes I think the bolding gets out of hand because the reader's eye does go there and may skim over other stuff. Know what I mean?

Chuck, glad you enjoyed it. It was very comprehensive for me too. It took a few days of thinking about what I had learned in order to put things down in a clear and concise way. Hopefully it will help along the way. Thank you for stopping by.

Dawn, thank you so much. It does have lots of stuff in it. Thank you for your commenting and I'm sure it won't take long to get up to speed. Now you have at hand those tips and short cuts to help you move even faster.

Sandra, I didn't seriously start with the Rain until April. All of the things I've shared, are things I've learned since then. So? Do you think I spend a lot of time here? <grin>

Gita, thank you for stopping by and for commenting. Maybe I'll be gathering other information to share as I am on the Rain longer. There is still A LOT I don't know, trust me.

Dan, well thank you so much. I appreciate your complimentary comment.

Candace, welcome to the Rain. We're glad to have you and look forward to seeing your posts. Thank you for stopping by and posting a comment.

Joddie, with two d's....thank you so much for stopping by. I agree not only with your take on the Rain, but with the tools we are able to apply in other areas of our life.

Karen, why thank you so much. I've been pretty much addicted since April to the Rain and wanted to help others along the way learn at a much quicker pace than I did. I'm glad it will help others along the way.

Scott, you can have a glitter thingie too. I've posted mine below. Just go to the website, put in your name, colors, etc., copy and paste it into your file as a gif, and load it up. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind words.

I am still working on the same list as you, and are probably just about as far along.  One thing I have learned that I cannot be without is the search feature.  If I am looking for something or someone, I enter it into the search field at the top of the page, click on where I want to search, (profiles or blogs) and presto, I find it without a lot of trouble.  If you want to know how to do the grazr or meez, you just use that as your search term.  Save lots of time trying to remember who posted it and when I saw it.

Fantastic post.  There is so much to learn out there in the AR world and this was a wonderful place to start.

Teri,

Thank you for a very informative and exhaustive post.  (I got ten words in.)  I was paying attention.  LOL  This is definitely a Newbie material.  Congrats on being featured!  Love the glitter. : )

Hi Yolanda, glad you counted the words. I make certain of that now although I oftimes go over the ten comments and don't care at that point. Thank you for stopping by and for the upbeat comments. I like the glitter too......;-)

Hi Teri,

Great post! I actually learned some of these things the other day when I did my first post! I wish I had known them first! I also learned that you live in the same city as I do, how cool! Give me a call if you ever need a stager, I'd love to work with you! Thanks for the 411

Penny, thanks for stopping by. I actually have been trying to talk a seller into having his/her home staged. They are considering it, but we'll have to see. I definitely will keep you in mind. Yes, I live in Mesa and love it!!! You are most welcome :-)

Thank you for this - I have bookmarked it and will refer to it often. I have some commenting to go and do. Being new to this, I know I haven't kept up with responding to all the comments. Thanks for the etiquette tip - and the Meez.com animation link. I created one tonight. Great Post!!!

Teri - I confirmed what I already suspected.  There is so much to learn about Active Rain and only so many hours in the day.  I've learned that this is becoming my addiction and that when I have insomnia, there is always someone on Active Rain with me.  I learned a lot from your top 40 and may contact you directly with some questions.  Thanks for your very informative post.

One last thing I learned...To confirm a post or comment I must type in words that are either beyond my vocabulary (I thought mine was pretty extensive) or Active Rain makes up fake words.  I'm hoping it's the latter, because if not, I've learned that I now need to spend time away from Active Rain on Dictionary.com!

This is really a great post.  With what you have learned it's helping us all to learn even more.  Thank you! One of my favorite posts is http://activerain.com/blogsview/137735/Have-You-Considered-Reciprocating by TLW.  I love the idea of reciprocation.  We all learn from each other.

Erica, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I appreciate it. I just returned home from a nice long weekend thus the lateness in responding. Thanks again.

Adam, feel free to contact me directly anytime I can answer a question. Many of my top 40 are yet a mystery to me 'cause of the time constraints. I did read them all, but haven't had time to completely implement everything yet.  I don't have insomnia, so that isn't an option for me. :-) I think just speaking the way you did here was fine. No need for fancy words. Thanks for your comment and for visiting.

Julie, thank you for dropping by. TLW's post was great. You'll be seeing me on one of your blogs as a commentor. Thanks for coming by.
