I read an article this morning bringing up the point that security systems may do more harm than good.  Former burglars have admitted to pursuing a home with a security sign out front thinking there are more valuable items inside than one without.  If you do have a security sign make sure it is a generic one.  Intruders may take the name and investigate the details of the workings of it.  They go on to suggest security cameras or even fake ones as the best deterrents.  Nobody wants to be caught on video even if they have a mask on.  Interesting article.  Hope someone finds this useful!

Outside motion lights are still another excellent way to discourage prowlers.

Most burglars are not as organized as this. They want to just kick and grab. The really together and straight thinking burglar your suggesting here is a pretty rare beast. But your ideas on generic warning signs are good for any variety of burglar.

Good point, I have a home security system as well as the motion lights around my home. I also have small hidden camera's on all 4 sides of the house and one on the back deck area and front entrance, they recored to a vcr and we are able to view outside the house right on our tv's. If someone really wants to get in they will even if the security system is activated, but having the systems let's you sleep better at night.
