The Bodie Island Lighthouse is getting some repairs done to keep it from falling down. The tower has been closed for the past 2 years after 2 pieces of the belt course fell off. The belt course holds the lighthouse together so the tower was closed for safety reasons.

The fix is just a band-aid due to lack of funds. The whole lighthouse needs to be reworked from the bottom to the top but congress hasn't appropriated any money fot it. The Bodie Island Lighthouse began signaling mariners in 1872. This is one of the nation's landmarks and needs to be preserved.

The Bodie Island Lighthouse is about 5 minutes south of Nags Head and is well worth a look.
