Yesterday I noticed something.  Two properties that I had listed had both sold three years earlier.  When I was doingSt. Louis taxes going up! my research for the listing presentations, I noticed that the property taxes on each had gone up over 40% in that three year period.  One of the properties was paying a bit over 49% more taxes now, than three years ago.

This made me wonder...What the hell are the various counties and cities doing with all of this extra tax revenue?  If you look at how real estate values have skyrocketed in the last 5 or 6 years, their coffers have to be overflowing.  Inflation has been pretty mellow, I think that it has averaged about 3% per year or so and I haven't noticed any extra governmental services coming my way, so what the hell is up?

How about you guys out there?  Do you have any ideas as to what is going on with all that extra money that the counties and cities are raking in?

I'd be curious to hear what you all have to say on this issue.

2 Comments on What Are They Doing With The Money?

Property taxes have increased over 180% in the past 20 years in my county.  We still have pot holes and a drainage system that flood whole neighborhoods.

We have trippled the number of public parks and there is now free day care for people that don't want to deal with their kids.  The money all went to make the local government bigger, more workers for the parks, more case managers for the free babysitting.

Daniel:  At least you're seeing some additional government services.  Here in St. Louis and St. Louis County, I haven't really seen any improvements, at least not on par with the level of revenue increases, in government services.
