Are you motivated or are you driven

I have heard these terms used a lot over the years.  Have you ever wondered which one most defines you?

When I think of motivation I really tend to sort it into daily compartments.  Each day I motivate myself to complete the tasks that I know will lead to my future success.  Some tasks seem mundane for example, trying to figure out why the printer is not working, or the task of just picking up the phone can seem like a staggering exercise.   You know, when the phone suddenly puts on a hundred extra pounds making it physically impossible for you to complete your prospecting calls!

Other activities are much more enjoyable such as previewing a house or speaking with a referral, these don’t seem like work at all!  If  I’m not motivated I will look for an inspirational post, such as Broker Bryant’s Move forward….Your future is waiting!  I also like to seek out those folks that boost me up just by their positive attitude, focus and/or humor.

Being driven evokes a much stronger feeling, almost a hunger that keeps me focused on my long term goals.  I personally find that drive is much stronger and much deeper than motivation.  It comes from within.  It’s my inner desire to succeed despite the setbacks that I encounter on a sometimes daily basis.

Personally I think drive most defines me…….I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Ana- I think that I am both motivated and driven...motivated because of 5 little mouths at home and driven because of my goals and dreams I desire to fulfill!

I like that Dan!  I'm sure the 5 little mouths make it quite real!

Hey Ana,

I'd have to say I am more motivated than driven but trying to be more of the other. I'm beginning to do more of what I enjoy and focus on what means the most in life. I'd have to say ultimately everything I do is both driven and motivated by and for my family - wanting to see them have a wonderful life and seeing it happen moves me forward.

I think it's important to know where your desire to succeed comes from and how to keep it going!

I can relate Abraham!

Beth you are definitely driven!

Ana, you defined it very well in your post. Motivation and Drive are two different things. A person can be 'driven' to do just about anything. And the outcomes are not always positive.  It can be characterized by an insatiable desire to do something. It can even become an obsession. Motivation is entirely different. It too can have negative or positive outcomes.

I think all of us are both motivated and driven to do various things. Sometimes they're related.  For example, a person can be motivated to go the extra mile at work out of a drive to get to the top in the corporation.  One gives impetus to the other. But they don't have to be related. And there doesn't have to be a goal in mind.  A person can simply be motivated to call a loved one, or motivated to clean the house. No drive involved. Just something that needs to be done.

Some days I'm driven to be motivated and then sometimes I'm motivated to be driven.

Great responses!

Greg I'm the same way on many days!

Leon, most definitely talking about positive drive and motivation!  Good points!
